Light paintings

In 2020, a group of scientists managed to produce matter from the collision of two powerful laser light sources. A fascinating concept. It may help to understand the essence of the universe and its inner workings.

In this project, I adopt the opposite approach. Rather than combining light beams to obtain greater energy, I break them up, opening the doors to the unpredictable. By definition, lasers maintain their coherence so that light can be focused into a very narrow beam. I take laser light sources and I disrupt that coherence.

This process allows me to use light almost like a paint brush to create what I call light paintings. The resulting images have a three-dimensional property, where different colours of light appear to exist at different levels of depth.

Ultimately, my light paintings are a metaphor: the universe functions on fields and energy. Light can be interpreted as both, with which small miracles can be achieved. Light, which we humans came to know through the sun and then fire, may indeed be a core ingredient in the recipe of the universe.
